GUM ARABIC

Gum Arabic, or Acacia gum, is natural exudates from the acacia tree. This exudate is a complex polysaccharide, which is completely water soluble.

Acacia gum is a dried exudation obtained from the stems and branches of strains of Acacia Senegal and Acacia Seyal related species of Acacia (family Leguminosae). It consists mainly of high molecular weight polysaccharides and their calcium, magnesium and potassium salts, which on hydrolysis yield arabinose, galactose, rhamnose and glucuronic acid

The main source of Gum Arabic is Africa and Sudan is the world’s largest single producer of Arabic Gum. The three largest exporters of crude gum arabic are Sudan, which accounts for 66% of the total, Chad with 13%, and Nigeria with 8.5%, in 2014–2016.

Usage

It has been used in the food and pharmaceutical industry as an emulsifier, texturiser, coating agent, and encapsulator of flavours and oils. Its nutritional and health benefits are also much sought after, as it is a soluble dietary fibre.

Description

Unground Acacia Gum occurs as white or yellowish-white spheroidal tears of varying sizes or as angular fragments and is sometimes mixed with darker fragments. It is also available in the form of white to yellowish-white flakes, granules, powder or spray-dried material.
